The Adamawa State Government has donated cash and support items to nursing mothers, antenatal women, sick patients and newly born babies at the Adamawa State University Teaching Hospital, Yola, and Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital.
The gesture was part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The items were distributed across various departments and wards, including the paediatric, maternity and labour wards of the two health institutions.
Speaking shortly after the exercise, the leader of the state government delegation and Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Barrister Leader Leneke, said the gesture was aimed at celebrating the Independence Day with patients, nursing mothers and children in the hospitals.
Barrister Leneke said the state government considered it necessary to visit the two major health institutions and share the spirit of the celebration with people receiving medical care.
He said the gesture would make the beneficiaries feel a sense of belonging and assured them of the government’s concern for their wellbeing.
The Commissioner said more than 200 people benefited from the gesture across the two health institutions.
He added that improving the healthcare system remained one of the cardinal objectives of the Fintiri administration, noting that the government had upgraded the former Specialist Hospital, Yola, to the Adamawa State University Teaching Hospital to improve access to healthcare.
Barrister Leneke also said medical care for children aged zero to five years is free in all state government health facilities.
Some beneficiaries who spoke to newsmen expressed appreciation to the Adamawa State Government and prayed for blessings upon the administration.
Items distributed included pampers, sanitary pads, detergents and fruit juice, among others.
The Commissioner was accompanied by the Commissioners for Culture and Tourism, Women Affairs, Land and Survey, Transport, and Solid Minerals Resources, as well as the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Strategy, among other government officials.
